MCI Expands into Treaty Reinsurance
MCI is pleased to announce its intention to expand into the treaty reinsurance market, further strengthening its underwriting capabilities and broadening the reach of Lloyd’s Syndicate 1902.
The new business unit will be led by Jon Spence, an experienced specialty reinsurance underwriter who will join MCI in the new year. The portfolio will include a diverse range of classes, including non-proportional and proportional core speciality lines as well as esoteric and bespoke product solutions.
The move represents an important milestone in MCI’s continued growth strategy and demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to developing specialist underwriting expertise in attractive and evolving areas of the market. By building on its established underwriting platform and strong market relationships, MCI aims to create a disciplined and sustainable specialty treaty proposition.
MCI currently underwrites through Lloyd’s Syndicate 1902, which has been approved for £143.5 million of stamp capacity for 2026. The syndicate specialises in life sciences and clinical trials, medical malpractice and commercial liability, political violence and terrorism, cargo and specie and the planned expansion reflects MCI’s ambition to continue diversifying its portfolio while maintaining its focus on underwriting excellence.
MCI’s Group CEO & Active Underwriter Phil Trafford said:
“The appointment of Jon Spence brings significant market experience and will support MCI’s strategy of combining specialist expertise with disciplined portfolio management to deliver long-term value for brokers, clients and capital providers.”
