Philip Trafford
Phil started his insurance career in 2000. In 2004 Phil moved to QBE to take up a role as pharmaceutical underwriter within the company operations. The role expanded over the next 10 years, initially into medical malpractice and management of the medical liability portfolio and then additionally into the International liability space where he was responsible for the Canadian liability portfolio. Phil established MCI in 2014.
Phil previously worked for Barbican’s Lloyds Syndicate 1955 where he was responsible for the oversight of MCI.
Healthcare

James Banks, PhD.
James is responsible for the medical malpractice portfolio at MCI.
James started his insurance career in 2010 at Lloyd’s of London and in 2011 moved to QBE to work as an Underwriter within the Medical Liability team where he was responsible for the day to day underwriting of medical malpractice, clinical trials and pharmaceutical liability. In 2014 James became responsible for the medical malpractice portfolio.

Lauren O'Neill, PhD.
Lauren worked with our Infectious Disease team through 2021 helping develop our IDL product and in January 2022 joined the team as our Infectious Disease Practice Leader.
She has 11 years of scientific laboratory-based research experience and previously worked at King’s College London as an immunologist studying Ebola virus and SARS-CoV-2. Lauren has a BSc in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Arizona and a PhD in Immunology from King’s College London.

Eleanor Sterland
Eleanor joined MCI in December 2020 as an Underwriting Assistant under the auspices of the Life Sciences Head of Class. She also works closely as an analyst on the Infectious Disease Liability project. Eleanor completed her Undergraduate Degree in Medical Microbiology and Virology at the University of Warwick, later continuing on to attain her Master’s Degree investigating the Epidemiology of, and Risk Factors associated with Zoonotic Visceral Leishmaniasis infection in Brazil.
Life Science

Daniel Starmer
Dan is responsible for the pharmaceutical and clinical trials portfolio at MCI.
In 2000, Dan began his career at Aon in London, and moved to Paragon in 2004. In 2007 Dan joined QBE to work as an Underwriter within the Medical liability team where he was responsible for the day to day underwriting of the Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, and Clinical Trials account on a global basis. Dan was promoted to Portfolio Manager of the Medical Liability account in 2014 where his responsibility was further extended to the Medical Malpractice account.

Thomas Arscott
Tom joined MCI in January 2022 as an Underwriter, working alongside the Heads of Class to provide underwriting support across the growing MCI book.
He joins us from CFC Underwriting where he worked as a Life Science Underwriter, with a focus on both Professional Indemnity and Product Liability. Tom has a degree in Biomedicine from the University of East Anglia.

Ryan Black
Ryan joined MCI in August 2022 as an Underwriting Assistant.
Ryan previously worked in the recruitment sector before making the decision to progress his career in insurance.
Short Tail Lines

Andrew Bauckham
Andy started his insurance career in 1998, and joins MCI for the 2025 year of account, leaving Arch after approaching 3 years. Prior to Arch, Andy spent 23 years at Chaucer Syndicate, firstly working within the Treaty and Political Risk underwriting teams for 10 years, then subsequently focusing on the Political Violence and Crisis Management market. Andy has twice built two of the largest and most profitable portfolios in the Lloyd’s market, during a period of substantial market change, and served as LMA Political Violence Chairperson for 5 years prior to departing Chaucer in 2021.

Devdarshan Ray
Dev brings nearly 15 years of broking experience with Lloyd’s brokers in the London market, following few years in the technology sector within banking in Mumbai. He gained valuable cross-class experience at a niche independent broker specializing in Marine, Energy, Political Violence and Reinsurance for almost five years. In 2015, Dev joined Willis Crisis Management, where he progressed to Executive Director and Deputy Head of the Terrorism and Political Violence Team. In this capacity, he held global responsibility for a substantial team of brokers, overall strategy, managing distribution, business production, thought leadership initiatives and operational functions.

Mark Kelsey
Mark has over 15 years’ experience underwriting Political Violence and select Crisis Management sub classes. Mark joined Aspen Insurance in 2011, worked for several successful start-up MGA arrangements, before joining Markel as a Senior Underwriter in 2022. Mark’s experience of niche MGA sector, and large corporate underwriting, coupled with long term broking relationships in the London market will be an invaluable addition for MCI.

Louis Robertson
Louis has been in the Lloyd’s market for 20 years having joined Willis in 2004. After 7 successful years working within the Fine Art, Jewellery & Specie team he moved to Watkins Syndicate to begin his underwriting career. In 2015 he moved to Tokio Marine Kiln to establish a Fine Art & Specie book and over a period of 9 years, this became a market leading portfolio until Louis joined MCI in April 2025.

Chris Terry
Chris started his insurance career in 2007 and joins MCI for the 2025 year of account. He previously spent 13 years at Apollo where he was part of the team which built the original Marine portfolio and later headed up the Cargo account. Prior to that, he worked at Chaucer Syndicates as an underwriter within the Cargo & Specie team. Chris has a track record of outperforming Lloyd’s market average profitability and has been involved with several market committees and initiatives during the last 18 years.

Catherine Turvey
Catherine brings nearly a decade of specialised experience in Fine Art & Specie in the Lloyd’s insurance market. Her career began in 2016 as a wholesale broker at Gallagher, where she developed a strong foundation in placement and relationship management.
In 2021 she transitioned into Underwriting at Chubb Global Markets where she honed her skills across all Fine Art & Specie disciplines, and then joined MCI in June 2025.

Olivia Winther
Olivia joined the Specialty division at MCI in July 2025 after four years in the insurance market. She began her career in 2021 working in the Terrorism and Political Violence team at SCOR before moving to Arch Insurance International in 2023 as an Underwriter for that class. Prior to her underwriting career, she undertook a master’s degree in international security from UCL gaining specialised expertise in terrorism and cyber threats. Olivia will focus on bespoke solutions and collaborative opportunities within the Political Violence, Political Risk and Cargo War / Logistics lines.

Siri Richert
Siri joined MCI as an Underwriting Assistant within the Short Tail team in November 2024. She holds an MSc in Security Studies from UCL, as well as a BSc in Intelligence Analysis and second BSc in Strategic Communication, both from Lund University.

Cameron Dewar
Before joining MCI as an Underwriting Assistant in 2025, Cam worked as an Account Exec in Southern China and Hong Kong. Cam has a BA in Human Geography specialising in Arab and Islamic studies from the University of Exeter.
Finance

Rebecca Tucker
Rebecca joined MCI in December 2021 as Director of Finance and Operations. She joins us from Aspen Insurance where she previously worked as the Syndicate Financial Controller.
Rebecca has 15 years’ experience in the insurance industry and is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA).

Luke Thompson
Luke joined MCI in April 2022 as an Assistant Financial Accountant.
He joins us from Agora where he previously worked as an Assistant Accountant. Luke has worked in the finance sector for 8 years and is currently studying for his CIMA exams.
Operations & MI

Jorge Del Pilar
Jorge started his career at Aon Spain in 2003 as a Junior Underwriter. He moved to Scotland in 2007 were he completed an MBA and continued his career in insurance joining Gallagher as an Accounts Technician.
After several internal promotions, he then transitioned to London in 2015 where he has grown his career in different insurance brokers and MGAs performing various roles within Operations, DUA, Technical Accounts, Credit Control and MI areas.

Bhanu Akula
Bhanu joined MCI in August 2022 as an Analyst Developer and is leveraging his data engineering skills in designing, building, and maintaining scalable data infrastructure and systems in cloud technologies.
He has extensive experience as a technical lead on property and casualty, as well as healthcare insurance projects. He has successfully managed large-scale transformation projects, transitioning from legacy to cloud technologies. He shifted his career focus to the field of data technologies and possesses extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of data analysis, data modeling, and data visualization. Bhanu has Masters Degree in Data Science and Analytics from the University of Hertfordshire.

Alvin Leigh
Alvin joined MCI in May 2021 training as an Underwriting Assistant in the General Liability division.
Alvin completed his Undergraduate Degree in Mathematics at the University of Nottingham.
Administration

Emily Walker
Emily joined MCI in August 2021 as Philip Trafford’s Personal Assistant.
She previously worked as a PA at a Lloyd’s insurance broker and started her career as a Legal Secretary in an Employment Law Firm.
